But what is “Montessori” anyway?

Much of my teaching and parenting style derives from the Montessori Method (created by Dr. Maria Montessori). Now I’m sure most of you have at least heard of Montessori and can conjure up a few images of low, open shelves, simple wooden toys, and natural materials and colors. It can seem a little mysterious, maybe even a tad “elite” and hipster, but Montessori is truly an amazing process and I think it’s time we explained what is Montessori anyway.

Over the next several weeks, we will be diving into the Montessori Method and looking at its major key aspects. Together we’ll chat about not only the origin of the educational ideology, but also how to implement it in your daily parenting and teaching. I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite books and resources along the way!

Sometimes we “do” Montessori, but mostly we do life. It’s real and crazy and not always “by the book” Montessori, but the Montessori Method is my inspiration and, speaking from a researcher’s perspective, an effective tool for teaching and raising little ones who love learning, stay curious, and live wild and free.
